The Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) exam is offered by the Chartered Institute of Linguists and is taken by many prospective public service interpreters in the UK. Every year, a disproportionately high percentage of candidates fail just one part of this exam - namely Task 3b - while obtaining good grades in all other parts of the exam.

Candidates are obliged to retake Task 3b year after year at great expense and are unable to continue working as interpreters in spite of having passed the Interpreting sections of the exam.

"We, the undersigned, have all successfully completed all sections of the DPSI apart from Task 3b. We feel that this section of the exam is disproportionately difficult to pass in comparison with the rest of the examination and the high percentage of failure rates in just this section of the DPSI exam demonstrates that it is not fit for purpose."
