As a citizen of Falmouth, it is important to me that our community is safe, particularly for child pedestrians.

This petition is being used to request an increased focus on pedestrian safety in Falmouth, by implementing 4-way stops at the intersection of Back Road and Dyke Road, as well as the intersection of Town Road and Dyke Road.

This petition is also being used to request a reduction in speed limits in school zones.

Walking is a healthy activity and increased safe walking by children would benefit personal health, the health of communities and our society as a whole. Research shows that pedestrian safety depends highly on vehicular speed. Traveling at a speed of 50 km/h increases the risk of pedestrian death by almost 8 times when compared to traveling at 30 km/h. Reducing speed limits in designated areas reduces pedestrian injury and death. Pedestrian injuries are the third leading cause of injury-related death for children under the age of 14 years.

Implementation of 4-way stops at two key intersections in Falmouth, near the school, would lead to reduce speed limits in these areas, as well as providing a safer walking environment for students.

We , the undersigned, call on the Province of Nova Scotia to revisit the current legislation on:

(1) Speed limits in school zones. The posted speed limit in a school area should be reduced to 30 km/hr.

(2) Requirements for implementing 4-way stops. Traffic volume should not be the only factor used to determine if an intersection qualifies for a 4-way stop. Other factors including proximity to a school zone, and lack of visibility approaching the intersection should also be considered.
