Repeal Anti-Terrorism Laws |

Category: Civil Rights
Region: Australia
Target: Australians
Background (Preamble):
The draconian Anti-Terrorism laws were abused by Australian governments several times since their introduction. The most clear example of this abuse was the case of Dr Haneef. It was very clear that too much power was given to the government and security agencies. Australia has enough criminal laws that can deal with any crime.
Petition:
TO THE HONOURABLE THE SPEAKER AND MEMBERS OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
We, the undersigned Australian citizens, have serious concerns about the implication of Anti - terrorism laws. We are watching very sadly the treatment of Australian citizens arrested according to these laws. Our concerns are:
1- These accused were in detention for long period without trial;
2- They are not allowed to be released on bail, even if they will be required to wear detecting devices.
3- Most of the evidence against them are classified as “secret” and hence are not known to them, to their solicitors or media and concerned citizens;
4- Their chance of receiving fair trial after all these circumstances of their arrest and subsequent media and government circus is very slim;
5- All confiscated materials from their homes and the homes of their relatives are still not returned for them.
We call on the government to insure that these issues be addressed to insure fair trial for them. This could happen by scraping Anti-Terrorism legislations which gives extraordinary powers to the Attorney General and the security agencies, especially ASIO.
