As an alumnus of UNILAG, I am totally opposed to the renaming of the university by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The name, UNILAG is a brand name for over 50 years, so, it should not be changed in the process of immortalising Chief MKO Abiola, winner of the June 12, 1993 elections annulled by self-styled President Ibrahim Babangida. Abiola deserves a monument in Abuja because he won a pan-Nigeria mandate.
Renaming UNILAG after him makes it look like what he had was a south-west victory. MOreover, the president made no consultations in renaming the institution.
The National Assembly should help preserve the brand name.
We, the undersigned, wish to impresss it on the National Assembly members not to pass President Jonathan's bill on the matter.
The name should be retained as UNILAG, pure and simple.
