JET Child Care Fee Assistance (JET) is a government scheme that allows students and people undertaking new employment (and who are receiving a government pension, such as the Single Parent Pension) access to considerably reduced child care fees for up to 2 years. In the 2012 Federal Budget, several changes were made to the eligibility requirements for JET. One of these was that Masters and Doctoral level students would no longer be eligible for assistance.

Those who had already commenced studies and had been receiving JET were 'grandfathered' until the end of 2012, and then completely cut off from JET with no alternative source of assistance offered. This has resulted in severe financial distress for many higher degree students, and in some cases students having to withdraw from their degree.

This petition therefore seeks a reinstatement of eligibility for JET to Masters and Doctoral students for the duration of their studies.

We, the undersigned, call on the Federal Minister for Child Care - Ms Kate Ellis - to reinstate eligibility for JETCCFA to Masters and Doctoral level students.
