The Wilmington City Council has recently increased their overall operating budget by $500,000. The Council has claimed it is their fiduciary responsibility to reduce the overall operating cost of the City of Wilmington. In order to finance their increase in spending/staff the council has chosen to attack the operating budget of the Wilmington Fire Department. By eliminating eight firefighter positions that are currently budgeted for in FY2015 the council claims it will save the city $511,000.

These cuts have been opposed by the Fire Administration, Citizens as well as the Firefighters Union.

I suggest that another savings plan be instituted, the immediate reduction of the 13 City Council positions down to a 5 member City Council, of which one of the 5 can be elected to preside as the City Council President. This reduction of city council would equate to more than the $511,000 as proposed by the elimination of 8 firefighter positions.

We, the undersigned call on the Delaware General Assembly to enact legislation to eliminate 8 Wilmington City Council positions and consolidate them into 5 councilmatic districts within the City of Wilmington.

Upon the establishment of these 5 positions a President will be elected to preside over the new Wilmington City Council.

It's time for the City Council to show true fiscal responsibility and good government leadership by supporting the elimination of their own council seats and a reduction of their staff for the greater savings and future of the City of Wilmington.
