The American people find themselves in a war fighting for or against same-sex marriage. The citizens of this country have voted against same-sex marriage, only to have their votes overturned by their state judicial system. While this is going on, both conservative and liberal citizens grow further apart in their views, and so do those in government who represent those people.

Through the many debates, it has been made clear how these government officials view marriage. What has been completely absent is an attempt at a solution. So, it is the responsibility of the citizens of this country to fight for what we want, and to create the country we want for our children.

I am an American Mother who wants my children to live in a nation that recognizes civil rights and religious freedom equally. The following petition is what I believe serves the rights of every person in this country.

In very simple terms this would mean:

Scenario 1: A couple wants to get married. They go to the appropriate government office, apply for, and sign a "Certificate of Legal Union". This couple wants to have a ceremony in a church, so they find a Pastor/Priest/ect. and have a marriage ceremony. Their Pastor/Priest/ect. gives them a "Certificate of Marriage".

Scenario 2: A same sex couple wants to get married. They go to the appropriate government office, apply for, and sign a "Certificate of Legal Union". This couple wants to have a marriage ceremony in a church, so they find a Pastor/Priest/ect. and have a marriage ceremony. Their Pastor/Priest/ect. gives them a "Certificate of Marriage".

Scenario 3: A couple (maybe same-sex, maybe not) want to get married. They go to the appropriate government office, apply for, and sign a "Certificate of Legal Union". They're not really religious, so they have a party to celebrate, and exhcange rings with their family and friends.

We ask the United States Congress to redefine marriage as a religious institution. As a religious institution, marriage can no longer be granted by the government, but only by members of a citizen's chosen clergyperson.

Every citizen who wishes to be united with their chosen partner, regardless of sexual orientation, must obtain a Certificate of Legal Union from their state. A Certificate of Marriage may be granted by a clergyperson unaffiliated with government. This is a solution which will recognize religious rights and civil rights equally, while ensuring that discrimination does not occur by the American Government or the American people.

This is a solution that will support freedom of religion, and the rights of all religious institutions/universities to live their chosen religion without government interference. This is a solution that will guarantee that all citizens will have equal rights in health care, child custody, spousal support, and all spousal rights regarding military and government employees.

We request that the United States Congress cease their partisanship on this matter and do what is best for America and America's future. Redefine Marriage.
