We the committee of UNMASK (Urgent Need Mental Health Advocacy South Kerry) are running this petition and intend to bring to the director of mental health services and the minister for health to over rule the new smoking restrictions in the acute unit of Tralee General hospital. The psychiatric unit in Tralee General Hospital Co Kerry are now not permitting in patients to use the smoking area freely. There are now 3 half hourly times where the shelter is open for patients.

Having been an inpatient and a smoker the area is a life line to patients. Being restricted to smoke at the new 3 half hourly times a day is proving to be highly stressful for smoking inpatients. What is already a very traumatic experience is now being made much worse.

Being an inpatient you are in a secure unit as it is but with the addition of the smoking area being closed most of the day this is dis encouraging service users that smoke to be admitted to the unit. As an adult it is our basic human right to smoke cigarettes if we choose to do so.

I'm calling on everyone to please sign this petition that will be brought to the HSE requesting them to overturn this new rule in the secure unit.

Please sign and support service users in having the smoking area available freely in the Psychiatric unit in Tralee General Hospital.
