Background (Preamble):
With one year to go until the 29th Games of the Modern Olympiad in Beijing, China, I am very concerned that China seems to be reveling in the international limelight yet does not seem to be holding up its side of the bargain by maintaining or improving human rights and social conditions (for instance, allowing Hong Kong a one person one vote election, allowing Taiwan its independence and allegations of human rights violations in Tibet and across China).
Petition:
We, the undersigned, call upon the Prime Minister of Britain (Mr. Gordon Brown MP), the President of the United States (George Bush) and the General Secretary of the United Nations (Dr. Ban Ki Moon) to ensure that human rights are upheld by the Chinese authorities and that discussions between China and other countries hold human rights as a key to any agreements and that if these agreements are not forthcoming by the beginning of 2008, to hold votes in the national parliaments of the world on the motion of a boycott of the 2008 Olympic Games.
