Friends & Neighbours:

My husband and I are concerned residents on Queen Victoria Drive.

Three times in the last month, our son, who is extremely cautious with his road safety (due to our constant nagging) has nearly been hit by people disobeying the speed limit on our road. All three times, these vehicles had ran the stop sign at Mount Lions Park. All three times, a soccer game was taking place and the area was heavily populated. My husband and I are personally tired of people speeding through our neighborhood, and past our park like they are rushing to a fire.

I sat adjacent the stop sign one evening between the hours of 5:00PM and 8:00PM and recorded 9 people completely ignoring the stop sign.

Another issue of concern is the rate of speed at which people travel on Queen Victoria Drive. They treat this subdivision as though it was the Daytona 500. This is unacceptable! According to Safe Kids Canada a child stuck by a car traveling at 50km/h has an 80% chance of dying as a result of the “accident”; Reducing the speed to 30km/h means that child has a 95% chance of surviving. The lack of “Children at Play” signs is insulting.

As Parents, Grandparents, Aunts, Uncles, and Friends to the children in this community, we should NOT WAIT until a child is lying in the road dead from a speeding car to act. Now is the time to act to prevent such a tragedy. These are not risks that our families should have to take into consideration when enjoying their neighbourhood.

Not only do we live in a visable school zone, but there is also a park in the centre of our subdivision. There are many children living in this area and there have already been injuries resulting from the careless driving.

We are asking for your help to prevent these types of things from happening again.

To:

Mayor, Fred Eisenberger
Ward 6, City Counsellor, Tom Jackson
Police Chief, Brian Mullen

We, the undersigned, are seeking your assistance to make the following changes with regard to child and pedestrian safety in the area surrounding Queen Victoria Drive.

This area has higher volumes of children due to Mount Lions Park, C.B. Sterling School, Kateri Tekakwitha School.

1. We propose a posted speed limit of:

30km/hour on Queen Victoria Drive.

2. Drivers often speed on Queen Victoria Drive. We propose speed bumps be installed at all stop signs, to ensure people are coming to a complete stop (neglected, more often then not):

Loconder/Queen Victoria
Quinn/Queen Victoria
Queensbury/Queen Victoria
Redbury/Queen Victoria

3. Installation of more “Children at Play” signs to remind motorists, that this is a neighbourhood, not a race track.

We, the undersigned, believe these simple measures will reduce the risk of child and pedestrian “accidents” in this area, and thank you for valuing the safety of the people and children who live, play and learn in this area.
