Prevent Salvia Criminalization in Canada and Create a Sensible Policy for Control
Petition published by Taylor Bradbury on May 08, 2011
Target: Health Canada
Region: Canada
Petition Background (Preamble):
This is an updated petition with the aim of preventing criminilization of the psychoactive plant Salvia Divinorum. You don't have to use Salvia to sign the petition. Everyone who can see the wisdom behind this proposal is invited to sign!!!
The main points behind this proposal are:
-Preservation of freedom of choice/diet
-Preservation of the taxed Salvia Divinorum industry
-Prevention of shift of Salvia Divinorum sales into unregulated, untaxed black market
-A sensible and simple new policy for regulating the plant.
Salvia must not be criminalized just because it offers a psychoactive effect. Outlawing Salvia is a gross restriction of a freedom that has been peacefully preserved. This is about civil liberties. We need to agree on a sensible solution that isn't going to waste money imprisoning Canadians!!

Petition:
We, the undersigned, call for Health Canada to dismiss the notion of adding Salvia Divinorum to Schedule III of Canada’s banned lists and substances acts.
Salvia Divinorum has been grown and traded in Canada for nearly 30 years. Sales of Salvia have generated millions of dollars of tax revenues, as an industry regulated only by the wisdom of shopkeepers. In that time, Salvia has proven not to cause concern over injuries. Allergic reactions and falls can easily be prevented with proper awareness.
Use of Salvia has proven not to cause addiction. Salvia offers a very intense and humbling experience. It is unlikely to ever become popular for these reasons. Salvia deserves to be researched for its medicinal qualities.
Salvia has been cultivated by humans for centuries. It breeds only through cloning itself, so there is a serious concern over extinction of the species. The Salvia plant can be properly protected through implementation of a sensible policy that will regulate the plant for responsible use:
This petition calls for a revision of tobacco licenses, so that businesses registered to carry Tobacco can also carry Salvia Divinorum leaves and extracts, and so that sale can be properly regulated by requirement of photo identification.
This petition supports the use of proper labeling on Salvia Divinorum products, including:
- Warnings on the dangers of inhaling smoke and unknown particles
- Warnings that Salvia may cause allergic reactions
- An express warning that Salvia must be used under supervision
- Warnings that Salvia should not be used in dangerous environments, with potential for falls or near open fires.
- Recommendations that the user lay down and be as calm or relaxed as possible
- Recommendations that the environment be as dark, and quiet as possible
Scheduling this plant will turn a small community of Salvia users into criminals. No Canadian should ever go to jail for possessing or trading Salvia responsibly. It is unnecessary to turn Salvia into a black market commodity.
There is an opportunity to regulate this plant and prevent misuse that Health Canada needs to promote.
Sincerely,
The Undersigned
