The Muslim Students Association of Howard University would like to request a dedicated space on the university's campus for the mandatory five daily Islamic prayers. To its credit, the University, until only a few years ago, offered a multi-faith prayer room located in the Carnegie Building. That room was taken away for renovation and has since been designated as a conference room.

Muslim students must drive, take public transportation or walk great distances to be able to offer their obligatory prayers in an area Mosque or a quiet space on campus. This problem has been compounded by the recent prohibition of students from praying in the health sciences library while studying for their exams.

This situation must not be allowed to continue given Howard’s historic and renowned appreciation for diversity of color, ethnicity, culture and specifically, religious diversity on campus which was particularly highlighted during the recent visit by a delegation of Muslim leaders from the United Arab Emirates in October.

A secure and dedicated space will serve the following purposes:

• Be open to all Howard University students, faculty and staff.

• Provide adequate space for Howard Muslims to offer the five obligatory daily prayers and the Friday Prayer Service (all of which require the necessary space for attendees to prostrate with their foreheads on the ground).

• Be located adjacent to a restroom facility to allow users to make ablution before prayer.
