A mosque is approved to be built on 16th Ave in Markham and despite what councillors who approved this decision claim, many local residents were left in the dark about the decision until they read it in a local newspaper article after it was approved.
Since the article was written, there has been an outpouring of comments and postings from outraged residents who say they were not informed and are clearly against this decision.
They want a public hearing to be held where all local residents are fairly involved and are heard on this decision. This petition is in response to that public outcry.
As taxpayers we have the right to expect that the Town of Markham will operate an effective Planning Department that will make recommendations based on a scientific and factual basis as opposed to lobbying by developers and special interest groups which some might think appears to be the case in recent decisions.
We, as signatories of this petition, believe that we have been misled and misinformed by Council, Real Estate Developers and the Group developing the Mosque. We demand that Markham Council place a moratorium until further notice on all construction in the area from Swan Lake on Highway 16th, West to Highway 48 and North on Highway 48 to Bur Oak Avenue. This will provide an opportunity to investigate, report on and satisfy residents’ concerns.
We, the undersigned, also call on Markham Councillors to repeal this decision to build a mosque on 16th Avenue as we do not agree with the decision.
We request that a public hearing is held to discuss this decision which would not be limited to residents in the area but rather include all Markham residents who wish to participate in this discussion.
