Target:
Jay Hummel, Superintendent and Ashland School Board
Region:
United States of America

Helman Elementary School parents contacted the Ashland School Board to voice their concerns about the large class sizes in many of the grades.

We appreciate and recognize the district's willingness to take action when this concern was raised. The current proposal to reduce class size states that continuing students may be transferred out of their schools against the wishes of their families. This would negatively impact all of the students, their families and the teachers who have worked so hard to build a strong Helman community.

Walker and Bellview Elementary School students would be affected by this decision as well. Let's stand together to keep our communities from being divided.

We, the undersigned, call on the district to remove from its plan any contingency that could result in the compelled transfer of any student already enrolled at an Ashland Elementary School, including any transfer to a remotely-located extension class.

Changes to district policy concerning out-of-zone or out-of-district students should not apply to students and their siblings who are currently enrolled under the district’s long-standing practice of allowing a family to remain at a school despite an out-of-zone address.

Working together, the district administration, parents and teachers can solve the issue of class size and still keep our school communities intact.
