The law in NYS for infertility is: requires insurance policies that provide coverage for surgical and medical care to cover diagnosis and treatment of infertility. The law specifically includes diagnostic tests and procedures as well as prescriptions.
It specifically excludes coverage for in vitro fertilization (IVF), Gamate Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT), Zygote Intrafallopian Transfer (ZIFT) and reversal of sterilization among others. One in ten couples have fertility issues.
This can be very stressful on a couple when trying to start a family, and want to enjoy the miracle of being blessed with one. Most states including NY only mandate a fraction of fertility treatments to be covered by our insurance carriers.
There are millions of couples that are told every year that the only way they can conceive is through IVF or other treatments not covered. The problem with IVF not being covered is out of pocket costs to patients. A typical IVF treatment cycle can cost anywhere from $5,000-$15,000.
With our economy hopeful men and women are struggling to achieve parenthood. Something no-one should be denied.
I ask you if you were in this position, and were unable to have children, would you want IVF to be a covered benefit for you? Do you want the chance to start a family when all other options fail?
I ask NYS congress members to mandate insurance carriers to cover IVF coverage. This is no longer an experimental treatment and allows NYS residents to experience the joys of parenthood.
