Armenian-Americans, like most Armenians in the Diaspora, have been following with attention—and concern—the recent developments in Turkey-Armenia relations, which have been dubbed “Soccer Diplomacy.” Armenian political parties, intellectuals and commentators have openly expressed concern on the nature of some of the discussions that were reportedly taking place between official Ankara and Yerevan, especially since the long-term gains of the Armenian cause seemed to be at stake.
In an effort to convey the concern of Armenian-Americans from all walks of life to Armenia's authorities, we have initiated this petition campaign. We call on all Armenians to sign this petition, thus expressing their firm stance regarding the non-negotiability of our historic rights.
We, the undersigned, wish to convey our grave concern regarding recent developments in Armenia's foreign relations. In particular, we are disturbed by reports of possible concessions being considered by the Armenian government as it seeks to normalize relations with Turkey and Azerbaijan.
We, too, believe that Armenia can best prosper when it enjoys good relations with its neighboring states. However, these cannot be obtained at the expense of our national patrimony, our national security, or our basic rights as Armenians. In recent months, there have been reports of 1) a possible bilateral commission to examine the issues surrounding the Armenian Genocide; 2) an imminent deal to concede the liberated territories of Artsakh as a precondition for a settlement with Azerbaijan; 3) a growing role for Turkey as a broker in the Transcaucasus, and specifically over the Karabagh negotiations. Such reports have all been met with reticence, even silence, from Armenian authorities while Turkish and Azerbaijani leaders continue to stake out aggressive, pro-active positions.
In order to rectify this state of affairs, we call on the Armenian government to clearly and immediately state its intentions regarding these issues and, where applicable, to refute or clarify misleading reports issued by Turkish, Azerbaijani, US and other commentators.
We thank you for your attention to this very serious matter, and hope this leads to a frank and open discussion of the situation at hand.
Մենք, ներքոյ ստորգրեալներս, կ՛ուզենք փոխանզել մեր խոր մտահոգութիւնը Հայաստանի արտաքին յարաբերութիւններու ծիրին մէջ նկատուող վերջին զարգացումներու կապակցութեամբ: Մասնաւորաբար, վրդոված ենք այն հաղորդումներէն, որոնք կը խօսին Հայաստանի կառավարութեան հաւանական զիջումներու մասին, Թուրքիոյ եւ Ատրպէյճանի հետ յարաբերութիւններու բնականոնացման ճանապարհին:
Մենք նաեւ կը հաւատանք, թէ Հայաստանի էապէս զարգացած երկիր կը դառնայ, երբ լաւ յարաբերութիւններ կը վայելէ սահմանակից երկիրներու հէտ: Սակայն, այդ մէկը կարելի չէ նուաճել մեր ազգային ժառանքութեան, մեր ազգային անվտանգութեան, կամ հայ ժողովուրդի հիմնական իրաւունքներու հաշուոյն: Վերջին ամիսներուն հաղորդումներ եղան. 1) Հայոց Ցեղասպանութեան հետ կապուած հարցեր քննարկելու երկկողմանի յանձնախումբի կազմութեան հաւանականութեան մասին, 2) Ատրպէյճանի հետ յարաբերութիւններու բարելաւման որպէս նախապայման՝ Արցախի ազատագրուած տարածքներ զիջելու համաձայնութեան մը մասին, 3) Կովկասի մէջ, եւ մասնաւորաբար Լեռնային Ղարաբաղի բանակցութիւններու գծով Թուրքիոյ դերի բարձրացման մասին, որպէս միջնորդ: Նման հաղորդումներու կապակցութեամբ Հայաստանի իշխանութիւնները նոյնիսկ լուռ մնացին, մինչ թուրք եւ ազերի ղեկավարներ կը շարունակեն թշնամական եւ յարձակողական կեցուածքը:
Այս կացութիւնը սրբագրելու համար կոչ կ՛ուղղենք Հայաստանի կառավարութեան որ անմիջապէս եւ յստակօրէն յայտարարէ իր կեցուածքը տուեալ հարցերու առնչութեամբ, անհրաժեշտութեան պարագային, հերքէ կամ պարզաբանէ թուրք, ազերի, ամերիկացի կամ այլ մեկնաբաններէ եկած ապակողմնորոշող հաղորդումները:
Շնորհակալութիւն կը յայտնենք այս շատ կարեւոր հարցին ձեր ցուցաբերած ուշադրութեան համար եւ կը յուսանք, որ այս մէկը կ՛առաջնորդէ կացութեան անկեղծ ու բաց քննարկումի մը:
