ΛΑΤΟΜΕΙΟ ΣΤΟ ΔΕΛΙΚΗΠΟ

Θέμα: Aίτηση από την εταιρεία Diarock Quarries Ltd για χορήγηση πολεοδομικής άδειας για ανάπτυξη λατομείου για παραγωγή αδρανών σκύρων και άμμου στην περιοχή Δελίκηπος.

Ζητήθηκε πολεοδομική άδεια για ανάπτυξη λατομείου στην Κοινότητα Δελικήπου σε περιοχή κρατικού δάσους «Αετόμουτη» της οποίας η έκταση της είναι 329.000 τ.μ.. Η σκυροθραυστική μονάδα θα καταλαμβάνει έκταση 34.000 μέτρων ενώ μια έκταση 15000 μέτρων με πυκνή βλάστηση θα καταστραφεί. Η εν λόγω περιοχή συμπεριλαμβάνεται σε περιοχή εξαιρετικής φυσικής καλλονής.
Η περιοχή βρίσκεται κοντά σε περιοχή ενταγμένη στο «Δίκτυο Φύσης 2000».

Δημιουργία Λατομείου σε ένα από τα σπάνια, προστατευόμενα δάση της Κύπρου.

Delikipos is a small picturesque village located in a beautiful area of protected forest land in the Larnaca area. It is a green oasis nestling between the major city conurbations. It is into this setting that one of the islands major quarry developers has entered.

Christakis Andreou the village Mayor recalls that over the years applications have been made for quarry developments to the Forestry Commission and all have been dismissed immediately due to the protected nature of the area. To cut even a single tree is legally forbidden without a permit, however the latest application for reasons that cannot be easily understood, has been referred to consultation status and a commissioning report has been delivered. Financial compensation has been offered to the village of Delikipos ,however this application has been rejected without exception by the village. After all, as the mayor says, without the trees, what are we as a village?

Τα επιχειρήματα του κοινοτάρχη είναι περιβαλλοντικά και κοινωνικά.
1. Καταστροφή 329.000τμ κρατικού προστατευόμενου δάσους.
2. Καταστροφή της χλωρίδας και πανίδας-μόλυνση του αέρα από τη σκόνη
3. Μόλυνση επιφανειακών και υπόγειων νερών
4. Οχληρία από τη διέλευση φορτηγών στο δρόμο Λευκάρων-Δελίκηπου-Κόρνου (και συνεχείς ζημιές στο οδόστρωμα αυτών).

The opposition to the quarry is based on a number of considerations:
1) Catastrophic destruction of 329000 sqm of protected forest lands
2) Destruction of trees and wildlife in and around the area, and air pollution from the dust
3) Pollution of the water table and rivers in the area
4) Noise from the trucks on the roads around Lefkara, Delikipos and Kornos
5) The further encroachment onto the thin green line of protected natural habitat left to today’s and future generations.

Ο κοινοτάρχης και οι κάτοικοι καταλαβαίνουν την χρησιμότητα ενός λατομείου στην οικονομία και ανάπτυξη της χώρας, αλλά όχι σε έναν από τους κύριους πνεύμονες της Κύπρου!

Whilst the village appreciated the need to provide sustainable economic activity, it does not support the destruction of its major natural resource and environment. Activities that help to maintain and support the unique nature of the forest lands would be supported, such as developments in education or tourism.

Για ένα χωριό που χρόνια τώρα προσπαθεί να αναπτυχθεί και να αυξήσει τους κατοίκους του, αυτή η ενέργεια θα αναστείλει όλες τις προσπάθειες που έγιναν μέχρι τώρα» λεει ο κοινοτάρχης «περιμένουμε ενέργειες που θα αναπτύξουν τους φυσικούς χώρους του χωριού και όχι να τους καταστρέψουν ,ώστε να ελκύσουμε παραπάνω κατοίκους.

It is also recognized that cement needs to be produced but by establishing such a major quarry development, what is a unique environmental resource will become yet another industrial zone between our villages and cities. For the undersigned this is too high a price to pay.
