School Bus Transportation Facts

According to the National Academy of Sciences “out of 25 million children that ride school buses to and from school each day there are 15 pedestrian fatalities at school bus stops annually.” That is 15 too many.

According to Wisconsin Department of Transportation Statues:

346.48

States that in Wisconsin school bus drivers are not allowed to use the flashing red warning lights & flashing red stop sign on any street that has curbs and sidewalks on both sides of the road in order to get motorists to stop when they are loading or unloading students. They must only use their hazard lights.

They are only allowed to use the flashing red lights and flashing red stop sign when the street has one curb or one sidewalk.

This statue exists for the state of Wisconsin unless local municipalities use another statue 349.21 that specifically states that any town, city, village or county may override statue 346.48 and allow all buses to use the flashing red warning lights and the flashing red stop sign at ALL stops.

This petition will be taken to Neenah City Council to change the law.

We the undersigned urge Neenah City Council to change its school bus passenger pick up and discharge policy in allowing all school buses to use Flashing Red Warning Lights at EVERY stop that either picks up or discharges students of any age.
