Missouri Western State University is in need of another History Professor. The History department has not had a new position open in there Department since 1977. Right now they have two European History and two American History teachers and they are spread thin.
An African American teacher will be beneficial to Missouri Western’s Campus. Not only does it expand the History Department it also gives the students an option to take a class that might not have been offered in high school. Research shows that some school districts do not offer African American History classes in high schools, or even acknowledge the African Americans who have paved the way to help form this country we all know and love.
African American History is not only important to the African American population on this campus, but to the student body in general. Yes, it is beneficial for African American students to know their history and the truth behind their culture but, all students can benefit from an African American History class. African Americans have made innovations and progressions to the United States society on a wide scale. So, simply not acknowledging them in is depriving Americans of all races from their culture.
Since high schools do not offer these courses, it is only fair to American students that their institution of choice offer classes they want to take. To be enriched is one of the main goals of getting a college education. Further enriching student s by informing them of important aspects of their history will greatly benefit them.
We, the undersigned, call on Missouri Western State University to hire an African American History Professor, to enrich and enhance their students' knowledge of what should be considered as part of American History.
