What is Meet in the Middle APS?
Residents concerned with Superintendent Erroll Davis’ proposal to the Atlanta Public School (APS) Board at the middle school level. The portion in CAPS below is of concern.
“Sutton will move to the present North Atlanta High School Facility in fall of 2013. As Sutton nears capacity in its new home, THE OLD SUTTON SITE MAY BE REPURPOSED AS A SIXTH GRADE ACADEMY FOR THE CLUSTER.”
What would Meet in the Middle APS like to see changed?
The clause “or as a second middle school to be determined at a future date” added to the end of the recommendation above.
Why should a second middle school be taken into consideration?
Sutton Middle School is already 51% larger than the next largest middle school in APS, Inman, and is projected to be 71% larger over the next decade. Given the growing size of Sutton and given its critical role as a transition between elementary and high school, we ask that the board include the possibility of a second middle school or other model as a long term option. Smaller environments allow for higher performance and allow more of our children to participate in extracurricular activities (athletics, arts etc.).
3/24/12 Admendment - To further clarify the 2 middle school position, Meet in the Middle asks that 2 equally strong and diverse schools be created. Meet in the Middle also asks that those 2 middle schools be fed by the elementary schools closest in proximity to each of the 2 middle school campuses, resulting in 'neighborhood' schools.
We support "Meet in the Middle APS", and we request that the following addition in CAPS below be added to the recommendation by Superintendent Erroll Davis and accepted by the Atlanta School Board:
"Sutton will move to the present North Atlanta High School Facility in fall of 2013. As Sutton nears capacity in its new home, the old Sutton site may be repurposed as a sixth grade academy for the cluster OR AS A SECOND MIDDLE SCHOOL, TO BE DETERMINED AT A FUTURE DATE."
3/19/12 Amendment - In the event that the APS board must decide NOW between a 6th grade academy and 2 middle schools, we STRONGLY SUPPORT 2 MIDDLE SCHOOLS.
