The mountain lion (Puma concolor), also known as puma, cougar, mountain cat, catamount or panther, and American Lion, depending on the region, is a mammal of the family Felidae, native to the Americas.
This large, solitary cat has the greatest range of any large wild terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere.
An adaptable, generalist species, the cougar is found in every major American habitat type. While the Florida Panther is the only subspecies currently on the endangered list; much of the natural territory of the American Lion is shrinking. America is a land of courage, strength, perseverance and beauty. The presence of an American Lion in an ecosystem is an indicator of the health of that system.
The American Mountain Lion should be the symbol of the heart and health of our nation.
