Waverley Council met tonight, 20th November 2012, to vote whether or not to make Bondi Beach plastic bag free. The vote was against, citing that the majority wanted to stage workshops to see how they could potentially roll the initiative out to the greater council area.

While it's admirable that the vision is bigger than Bondi, there is overwhelming community support to make Bondi plastic free and many were left puzzled as to why we couldn't ride the wave of community enthusiasm and begin implementing change NOW.

We, the undersigned, believe that Bondi should be a plastic bag free zone. We believe that the Iconic Bondi Beach should act with this pioneering message to the greater Australian and global community, that the busiest of places can still successfully and smoothly implement crucial change and transition to being more sustainable.

We motion for this issue to be passed in local council, without delay at the next Waverley Council meeting.
