North Carolina and Tennessee (which originally was western NC) never recognized marriage at the common law as valid without a license - if the marriage was entered into in NC or Tn.
In Campbell County Tennessee, which has one of the highest poverty levels in the state, the marriage license is expensive, $100.00 per license for those who do not have any counseling, and $60.00 for those who have.
The high cost of the license does not promote family or marriages in our county. With the family unit falling apart in America, we need to help people who want to get married.
With costs going up for the marriage license, this simply encourages people living together before marriage. Lowering the cost of the license will not fix the problem, but it could be a start.
We the people of the Campbell County ask that marriage license fees be lowered to 50 and 25 dollars respectively.
