The price of petrol is rising and is set to cripple households. In January 2008 at an all time high unleaded petrol was at national average of £1.04 a litre (£4.74 a gallon) by the end of that year it had fallen to 0.89p a litre only to rise again by December 2009 to £1.08 a litre. In 2010 it has steadily risen most months by 2-3p a litre resulting in a new all time high in December 2010 of £1.22 a litre.
This equates to £5.55 a gallon. 2011 is set to penalise motorists again by increasing an already extortionate rate by 7% which is twice the amount of infation and in most people's household, 7% more than their payrise this year.
The average household is going to suffer as this is an unavoidable charge for them, most people work away from their jobs and have to drive, another cost in a rising financially stressful time.
When petrol was displayed in gallons, the price rises were more in line with inflation and more honest increases.
We, the undersigned, call on the government to change the petrol prices to be displayed in gallons and to first decrease the price of unleaded and diesel petrol back in line with inflation and then to put a price freeze on it.
