Let's Ban Smoking

Every year cigarettes cause the deaths of millions of people world-wide, and incur a massive health-care cost to society. Each year over 15,000 people die in Australia due to smoking related incidents with 7.8% of all premature deaths related to smoking diseases. It cost tax-payers $254 million in NSW alone last year to pay for hospitalisation and treatment of smoking related diseases.

Children and bystanders are unwillingly impacted due to the poor choices of other people, and teenagers are the highest adopters of this damaging habit. The mean age for young people trying their first cigarette is 12 years of age. This means that age restrictions are ineffectual and the only effective way to stop young people from smoking is to remove cigarettes from our shops altogether.

Non-smokers are now the significant majority of our population at 83%, yet the remaining 17% of smokers still impact our society significantly.

Through this website YOU can make a difference by petitioning the government to ban smoking in Australia. We hope to create a country free of this addictive and damaging habit.

Our focus is on protecting those who cannot protect themselves; on people who are impacted by the behaviours of others, such as children whose parents smoke in their house or car; and in stopping the mad cycle of government short-term profiteering from taxes which won't cover the long-term cost to society.

If a federal government can successfully litigate against cigarette manufacturers on the basis of the negative health impact of their products, then surely the government itself is accountable for continuing to allow those manufacturers to distribute those same products to the public.
