Justice for Michelle Calvy

Michelle Calvy was 16-year-old she was walking to her family home off Livesey Branch Road, Blackburn, when she was grabbed from the canal towpath near Mill Hill, raped and strangled and her body dumped at a Tockholes beauty spot.

It was 1987 and the crime genuinely shocked the town and East Lancashire. But it didn’t take police long to find her killer and link him forensically with the crime. Anthony Entwistle had numerous convictions for sex offences and had been released from a seven-year jail term for rape only 17 days before the murder. When he was first jailed in 1974 he had been fortunate to escape a life sentence for four rapes. At his sentencing in 1988 for Michelle Calvy’s killing, Entwistle was told that he would die in prison. Then three years ago a review decided he should be eligible to be considered for parole in 2012. He lost his first bid for freedom.

We are ‘extremely relieved’ to hear that the authorities had refused to set him free. But they now fear he may be moved to a lower category prison in his hope of one day being released. Hardly surprisingly, that decision horrified his victim’s family and will always campaigned vigorously for him to be kept behind bars. We want MP Jack Straw to speak on our behalf hopefully handing him a petition with thousands of signatures on it to show our concern and so Michelle can Rest In Peace and his other victims feel safe.
