Background (Preamble):
José Belo, editor-in-chief of Tempo Semanal, has been charged following publication of an article in his newspaper and online publication, alleging corruption by Justice Minister Lucia Lobato in the awarding of a prison contract to her husband.
Petition:
We, the undersigned, call on the Government to drop criminal defamation charges against José Belo and his newspaper as contrary to the founding Constitution of East Timor, guaranteeing freedoms of speech and mass media.
