Throw pet thieves in jail for five years! 200 dogs are stolen in Ireland a week, thats 10,400 dogs a year, a massive industry in Ireland.

New laws needs to be created to stop this disgusting crime as at present their is no law to protect your beloved pets.

Latest figures show an increase of 15 per cent in pedigree dog thefts last year. Most popular breeds were labradors, cocker and springer spaniels.

Prison sentences of up to five years should be given to thieves who steal dogs, cats, horses and other pets.

Pet-lovers are disgusted that the law treats the theft of much-loved animals in the same way as that of a laptop or a mobile phone, and they want a specific new crime of pet theft.

The most popular breeds were labradors, cocker and springer spaniels, and handbag dogs such as pugs and chihuahuas.

Their has been no arrests or punishments for this crime as their are no laws to protect these loving creatures as it is seen as a unserious crime . Beloved pets are members of the family and people who steal them should be locked up for up to five years.

‘It can cause huge distress for owners and animals. The severity must be recognised and they should not be dealt with in the same way as someone who steals a TV.’
They are a huge part of many peoples family. For many people who don’t have children, friends or relatives left pets are their family.’‘There needs to be greater penalties and a lot more Garda work done to catch these criminals and prosecute them.’

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: ‘Pet theft can be a serious crime that can have a significant impact on victims, particularly in terms of the emotional and sentimental attachment for victims. Many victims having to seek or grief counselling as it has had such a huge impact on them.

‘Those who commit it should be appropriately punished and face a maximum custodial penalty of five years.’
