Think of a few words that you would never use in public. They are usually racial slurs or bad swears. Think about why you wouldn't use those words.
Did you know, Islamism is such a word and it offends Muslims all over the world? Let's make Islamism one of those words.
I agree that the word Islamism is offensive to many Immigrant, international, and citizen students on and off the U of C campus. Furthermore, the word is highly likely to provoke hostility in many of those who are not familiar with Muslims or Islam.
This hostility leads to a climate where stereotypes and prejudices are welcomed. This leading to hatred and discrimination due to irrational claims and statements.
Thus, the word Islamism has to stop being used in order to enhance a welcoming, inclusive, and diverse environment.
