#Roads & Transport
Target:
Jamaican Government, Members of Parliament and Road Constructors
Region:
Jamaica

Evidences of the problem stated in my petition are found in various area online, newspapers, and surveys from residents of communities around Jamaica. On Thursday, March 10, 2016 The Jamaica Gleaner stated that Jamaica roads density is one of the highest in the world. Journeying from Kingston to St. Thomas daily for me is like a punishment especially for the vehicle that I am traveling in. Dangerous potholes some filled with water were just a normal part of the route through most of the journey. I have been traveling these route for over 18 years and the conditions instead of improving has worsen. The question is is there a recognized standard for the construction of roads in Jamaica? A significant part of the problem is that roads are not done to satisfactory standards, therefore they do not last and the Government does not seem to insist on warranties from contractors. There was also an instance where a truck went over a precipice when it failed to negotiate one of the deep corners and this is just one of the many incidents that have taken place in this area.
Also evidence of poor drainage systems is evident in parishes such as Portland and Clarendon when it rains. In St. Thomas when it rains, residents are stranded due to the roads being cut off by landslides. Other issues are evident relating to these issues. I do hope the Government will take into consideration these issues and act in the best interest of the country and the citizens.

Problem: The issue of improper drainage systems and bad roads need to be dealt with as they contribute to numerous negative impacts.
Target: Government of Jamaica and other members of Parliament
Region: Jamaica
Majority of the rods in Jamaica are in a pathetic state, improper drainage systems also contribute to roads being in such conditions. Also there has been limited efforts by the government to ensure the drains are cleaned and maintained and the roads are repaired by professional road contractors, along with proper engineers who are able to construct roads professionally and with possibilities of the future in mind. These roads do not only cause accidents but also pedestrians are enduring the negative impacts; some which may include, water form potholes or the overflow of water from drains being splashed on them by motorists, and these issues are result from governments and politicians lack of interest and regard for these issues traffic jams are also results of the issue.
Several areas of roads stay unrepaired and drains left unclean, clogged and not made properly so there is not enough area for water to flow and it then runs off into roads causing further damages. Lack of coordination between (NWA) National Works Agency and the Police leads to issues where once a road is re-laid it could very well be dug up by other agencies later to lay pipes or to lay cables. We need to support these issues and stand up against this inaction and demand good roads and better drainage in our country, parish and community.
To tackle these issues government, politicians and members of government agencies need to ensure that they hire good contractors to build and repair the roads and drainage systems. They need to take into consideration certain things, calculating water-flows so when it rains there aren’t any run offs. They need to not hire amateurs but hire professional engineers to get the job done. They also need to standardize road-works when they need to be complete along with cleaning drains occasionally when they need to be cleaned. I believe we can combat these matters if we come together and campaign for good roads and proper drainage systems by signing this petition and sharing it with everyone.
