Petition:
Your Excellency,
We would like to take the opportunity to call your attention to the case of the four Iranian lawyers Nasrin Sotoudeh, Javid Houtan Kian, Abdolfattah Soltani and Mohammad Ali Dadkhah.
Ms Nasrin Sotoudeh was arrested in September 2010 on charges of spreading propaganda and conspiring to harm state security and has been imprisoned in solitary confinement in Evin Prison. On September 25 she began a hunger strike to protest being denied visits and phone calls from her family. On October 31 Ms Sotoudeh continued to protest her detention and ill treatment. In January 2011 Ms. Sotoudeh was sentenced to 11 years in prison in addition to the block to exercise its right and to leave the country for 20 years. Her sentenced has been reduced to 6 years in prison, and a 10 year ban from practicing law. The 20 year ban for her to leave the country has not been mentioned in the appeals court’s decision.
Mr Javid Houtan Kian is the lawyer who defended Sakineh Ashtiani. Mr Houtan Kian was arrested Oct. 10, 2010. He spent several days in solitary confinement in Evin prison and then transferred to the prison in Tabriz, in the section for drug addicts and AIDS patients. Mr Houtan Kian was tortured and threatened. We are very concerned for his illegal detention. Mr Houtan Kian has been accused of acting against national security and sentenced to 11 years in prison.
Mr Abdolfattah Soltani was detained without formal charge for 226 days in Tehran’s Evin prison from 30 July 2005 till 6 March 2006. On 30 July 2005, he was arrested whilst holding a sit-in at the building of Tehran’s Bar Association. He was protesting a warrant for his arrest, along with a search warrant for his home, both issued by the Chief Prosecutor for Tehran, Said Mortazavi, on 27 July 2005. Mr Abdolfattah Soltani was held in solitary confinement until 15 September 2005, when he was moved into a cell with another prisoner. On 6 March 2006, Abdolfattah Soltani was released on bail of 100,000 euros. On June 16, four days after the 2009 June election, Abdolfattah Soltani was arrested, his computers seized, and he was taken to an unknown destination, which turned out to be Evin Prison. He was held there for 72 days, 17 of which were in solitary confinement. Mr Abdolfattah Soltani he received a 13-year term sentence in remote prison of Borazjan 1000 km away from his family in 2012. He is also banned for 20 years from practicing law.
Mr Mohammad Ali Dadkhah is a prominent Iranian human rights lawyer. He is a co-founder of the Defenders of Human Rights Center (DHRC), which the Iranian regime has sought to suppress. In the aftermath of Iran's disputed June 2009 elections, Dadkhah represented several jailed political and human rights activists. In July 2011, he was sentenced by the Iranian judiciary to nine years in prison for attempting to overthrow the ruling system, among other charges. His sentence was upheld in April 2012, and on 29 September, he was called to prison to begin his sentence.
We demand their immediate release. Nasrin Sotoudeh, Javid Houtan Kian, Abdolfattah Soltani and Mohammad Ali Dadkhah are Iranian citizens innocent.
In awaiting your reply, be assured of my most respectful sentiments.
