Hope must stay! Grant Asylum for Gay Nigerian. Amnesty now – stop the insane, racist and homophobic system of detention and deportation!

Hope Nwachukwu is a gay man from Nigeria. Hope came to Britain seeking the freedom to be himself. He fled the anti-gay persecution and violence that he suffered growing up.

The Nigerian government is cynically stigmatising the LGBT community and extending its anti-gay policies. Being gay is already illegal in Nigeria. In Britain Hope has found friends and community and can be himself, but the authorities are threatening to take that away.

British Home Office officials and immigration judges deciding Hope’s future have all claimed that Hope has not done enough to ‘prove’ his sexuality in their eyes. This flies in the face of the evidence from Hope’s friends and former partner. Anyone passing by Hope could guess he is gay because he is so open – so much so that Hope has been the victim of anti-gay harassment and physical attacks walking down the street in Britain.

If homophobes here identify Hope as gay, what danger would he face in Nigeria, where such homophobes could attack him knowing they have the weight of government policy and laws on their side?

We, the signatories of this petition, say to all the British officials there is no place for anti-gay prejudice or racism in our society.

Britain must be a place of sanctuary, not harassment. We do not accept the deportation of Hope, or anyone to face persecution and violence for their sexuality.
