Central Washington University has made several steps towards total sustainability. These include:
- Building of Dean Hall, the first sustainable renovation on campus;
- Providing services that reduce carbon emissions, such as OPR camping trips and the Central Transit;
- Multiple clubs on campus and organizations are environmentally friendly, such as ERMA, Biology, Geology, Geography, and the newly formed Central Environmental Club.
In addition, Central Washington University promotes sustainability by:
Promoting carbon reduction
Continuing energy conservation and efficiency efforts
Reducing transportation related emissions
Recycling and waste minimization
Designing a liveable and walkable community
Planting native landscapes
Constructing and renovating structures that are "Green"
Maintaining a high ratio of open and vegetated property
Developing environmentally focused majors and curriculum.
Central Washington University has taken several large steps towards becoming fully sustainable.
We, the student body of Central Washington University, do appeal CWU President Dr. James L. Gaudino to employ a full time Sustainability Director.
Responsibilities of the Sustainability Director will include:
Adapt current university sustainability goals into a comprehensive University Environmental Sustainability Plan.
Provide support and leadership to departments as they target and implement the sustainability plan.
Develop and implement sustainability principles as they apply to education, research, and interdisciplinary projects.
Promote a conservation ethic in daily professional behavior of students, staff, faculty and administrators.
Be expected to lecture on topics related to Sustainability.
Work cooperatively with community partners to create a sustainable environment on the Central Washington University and beyond.
