We express our concern for Pennsylvania death row inmates Carol King (OC 7210) Michelle Tharp (OF 6593) and Shonda Walter (OJ 8227) housed at SCI Muncy.

The women have been moved recently, to another pod which houses the disciplinary inmates, which is causing the women an unbearable amount of stress and upset.

These women are finding the new conditions almost impossible to cope with and we are greatly concerned for their emotional and physical well being. Despite the fact that the women have a history of being model prisoners they are subjected to the constant calling out, shouting, screaming and banging of the disciplinary inmates housed on that pod.

The women are extremely keen and willing to work and become more involved in playing a positive role in prison activity, yet the 23/24 hours they currently spend in isolation in the new pod means they are denied these opportunities even more so.

These women have presented no disciplinary difficulties, despite the privileges they enjoyed before. We see no reason to house the women in such a bad environment after they were always model prisoners.

We call on the Superintendent to :

- ensure that measures are introduced for staff to control the noise level in the pod where the death row women are housed.

-give the death row women recreation time separately so that at that time the women can experience quiet and peace of mind.

-request that the women be taken out of their cells for work and activities on a schedule or at the least with some regularity.
