CHORD - THE NOOSE AROUND THE NECK OF HELENSBURGH

From 7th May 2013 Argyll & Bute Council are undertaking the first phase of the CHORD project (redevelopment of Helensburgh Town Centre).

This initial phase involves the redevelopment of the 'Front', predominantly West Clyde Street. This will involve barriers, closing the road, a one way traffic system in operation and general disruption and mess.

This will take place over an 18 week period from May to September - PREDOMINANTLY THE SUMMER TRADING MONTHS.

Two reasons for this have been given by Argyll & Bute Council:

1. The quality of work will be better if carried out over the summer months;
2. Manpower is cheaper in the summer.

Neither of these arguments are justified in such disruption to business.

AS A SEASIDE TOWN HELENSBURGH RELIES ON THE SUMMER MONTHS TO CARRY OUR BUSINESSES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. IN THE CURRENT ECONOMIC CLIMATE WE CANNOT AFFORD TO LOSE THE EXTRA BUSINESS WHICH TOURISM PROVIDES OVER THE SUMMER MONTHS - TOURISM WHICH WILL BE DESTOYED SHOULD THIS WORK GO AHEAD.

SHOULD THE BUSINESSES OF HELENSBURGH BE SO ADVERSLY AFFECTED BY SUCH WORKS THE FUTURE OF HELENSBURGH AS A WHOLE WILL BE AFFECTED.

We, the undersigned, call on Argyll & Bute Council to postpone the CHORD work to be carried out on West Clyde Street.

We believe that there is no justifiable reason for the work to be carried out during the summer months and can be carried out just as effectively, both in quality and cost, over the winter months when business will not be affected.

Should this not be possible we subsequently call on Argyll & Bute Council to adequately compensate all businesses affected and for all loss of revenue to be reimbursed.
