Hasan Huseynli, the head of Intelligent Citizen Enlightenment Center Public Union, an NGO based in Ganja, Azerbaijan, has been arrested on trumped up charges of hooliganism. He has been accused of stabbing a person that he never come into contact with. We strongly protest the arrest of Hasan Huseynli and consider his arrest completely unlawful.
Huseynli is education promoter, social activist, community leader and has had a great positive impact on hundreds of young Azerbaijanis. He has helped his students study abroad, and contribute to Azerbaijan’s development with their skills and knowledge. He is a highly respected civil rights activist, and his organization is credible in both Azerbaijan and abroad.
We consider the criminal investigation being conducted against Hasan Huseynli to be politically driven, in reaction to his political activism, independence and work with youth organizations.
We, undersigned, urge the government of Azerbaijan to immediately free Hasan Huseynli and drop all charges against him.
We think that every political prisoner in Azerbaijan undermines the country’s image abroad and its position in international organizations.
We request that the government of Azerbaijan approach this issue carefully, and that they release Hasan Huseynli immediately.
