Ever since it appeared on our TV screens in 1986, the Australian soap "Neighbours" has been a British institution. Ask the average man on the street what he recalls of the general election of 2001 and there is a good chance that he will stare at you blankly. However, ask someone what they recall of Scott and Charlene's marriage and you can be certain that their face will light up.

To the average British citizen, Neighbours is every bit as British as eating cold pizza for breakfast or wearing Union Jack Boxer shorts.

Currently Neighbours is solely represented on DVD by a pathetic compilation of 'best moments'. This is unacceptable. Imagine if Elgar's music were only available to the British public via one CD of the 'best moments'! Anyone who suggests that Neighbours is of less relevance to the people than the music of Elgar is a cultural elitist who has no place in a classless society.

This petition was recently rejected by no. 10's website- under the grounds that is 'Intended to be humorous, or has no point about government policy'. The Government may consider this to be a laughing matter, but I struggle to see the funny side where it comes to their blase attitudes towards the preservation of culture.

We, the undersigned call on the UK government to subsidise a release of Neighbours COMPLETE and UNEDITED in a boxset, in order to enable the citizens of the British Empire to relive the golden years of our past.

The Government has a responsibility to provide a grant from public funds - to ensure that a true British institution is preserved for future generations.
