Consumers Federation of Kenya (Cofek) condemns latest increment in fuel prices which will further complicate the livelihoods of Kenyans. It is unheard of for a litre of kerosene to cost Sh92 when Kenya is neither at war nor a failed state.
The latest increase is, therefore, a confirmation that;
(a) the ERC board of diretcors has no interest of Kenyan public at heart. We demand that the same board is immediately disbanded. The current scenario where government conspires with operators, in the name of ERC, to fix exorbitant and unacceptable prices will not be condoned.
(b) the ERC ignored the Energy Minister Mr Kiraitu Murungi’s public call to have it discuss with stakeholders before announcing the prices
(c) the formula applied in fixing the prices be suspended and revert to the free market forces which will be guided by market competition
(d) Article 35 of the constitution is being contravened in the case in which the ERC has withheld information in public interest on the actual profit margins, taxation, transport and other costs accruing to the oil marketers
Finally, and owing to inflation and hiked prices of fuel, we equally condemn the unfortunate and inhumane attempt by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers and Federation of Kenya Employers to lobby government against a substantive increment of minimum wages for workers.
On this, we are asking workers not accept anything less than 50% increment.
