In recent months, several people have been arrested and jailed under the Information Technology Act, Section 66 A.

Shaheen Dhada, Renu Srinivasan, Ravi Srinivasan and now Jaya Vindhyalaya have been arrested for online comments about politicians and bureaucrats.

Dear PM of India

We, the people of India condemn the IT act passed recently, especially the Section 66A which gives sweeping powers to the government to arrest or detain anyone making critical comments about politicians and government officials.

We contend that the provisions of this Act are incompatible with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, 1948 to which India is a signatory and the fundamental rights of the citizens as enshrined in the Constitution of India. Further, they are liable to be misused to stifle dissent and criticism without which a democracy cannot be a democracy.

We petition you therefore to repeal this draconian legislation and free all those arrested under its implementation.
