Statement condemning human rights abuses in Iran

Stop Executions in Iran

The unprecedented wave of suppression and arbitrary executions in Iran since July 2007 has sounded the alarm bells for international human rights organizations for an upcoming human catastrophe in that country.

Since Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s ascent to power, public hangings of youths and even women from construction cranes, stoning to death, the arrest of thousands of men and women under the pretext of “mal-veiling,” “combating Western culture,” and “hooligans and thugs,” mass detention of students and juveniles and subjecting them to horrific tortures in dungeons and in particular Ward 209 of the notorious Evin Prison, indiscriminate murdering of disenchanted youths on the streets by the State Security Forces (SSF), demonstrate the magnitude of public terror the mullahs’ regime has imposed on the Iranian people.

Such appalling crimes against the Iranian people are committed by a faltering regime with no escape from its terminal domestic and international crises, and faced with an unprecedented increase in popular demand for regime change in Iran.

This grave situation calls for a stern and decisive reaction on the part of the international community. However, international human rights organizations and Western governments alike have chosen to remain reticent about the Iranian regime’s criminal deeds. Instead, they continue to insist on holding more dialogue and offering further incentives and concessions to the medieval tyranny ruling Iran; a policy which emboldens the regime to prolong and intensify its suppression at home.

While supporting the call by the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, on the international community to adopt urgent measures to stop the executions in Iran, and declaring our solidarity with the Iranian Resistance, We:

1. Call on the international community to table a resolution at the current session of the United Nations General Assembly explicitly and decisively condemning the violation of the Iranian people’s fundamental human rights by the mullahs’ regime, and to adopt urgent measures to halt the recent wave of executions in Iran;

2. Urge the international community and in particular the EU countries to make their political and economic relations with the regime contingent upon the improvement of the human rights situation in Iran;

3. Call on the United Nations and the UN Human Rights Council to resume the monitoring of the human rights situation in Iran and re-appoint a Special Rapporteur for this purpose;

4. And, in view of the Iranian regime’s blatant disregard for the 53 resolutions adopted by various UN bodies condemning the regime’s systematic and flagrant human rights violations in Iran, call for referral of the mullahs’ three-decade-old dossier of human rights violations, in particular the massacre of some 30,000 political prisoners in the summer of 1988 which by all standards amounts to a crime against humanity, to the UN Security Council for adoption of binding measures against it.
