• It helps people who have a drug problem on welfare get back to being sober.

• Makes sure recipients are using the welfare money for its intended reason, to help them and their families get by till they are able to work/ find a job.

• Keeps them within the same regulations that are giving to 4/5ths of the working class, which are required to take a drug test prior to employment.

• Drug users on welfare will realize they can no longer fuel their addiction with federal and state money. They will either have to give up drugs in order to get benefits, or find their own way to pay for the drugs.

• It will dismiss the idea that all welfare recipients are drug users.

• Last but not least, it is a good way to wean out people trying to abuse the welfare system simply to fuel their drug addiction and a way for them to save side cash that would be otherwise spent on drugs.

The federal government should enact a law that follows Utah’s successful drug testing policy for potential welfare recipients.

Utah has a 3 step process that first starts with a drug questionnaire. After completing the questionnaire, if they answered anything that flags drug use, they will be required to take a drug test in order to receive benefits.

If they pass the test, they will receive their benefits. If they fail they will have two options. The first option is they can give up on trying to get their benefits. The second and better option, is to go to an expense paid drug treatment program.

After completing the program and passing a final drug test, they will be able to receive full benefits.
