The existing by-law created by ayuntamentos regarding stray cats is cruel and insulting. This edit states that it is illegal to feed stray animals and furthermore to neuter them! (Neutering has to be done via the town hall system).

Firstly this by-law aims to keep the level of stray cats high so they can then be classed as out of control and a nuisance yet furthermore it aims to starve these innocent creatures to death! Starvation is a slow and painful death and no civilized country who is a member of the European Community should inflict this on animals, many of whom were dumped on the streets by callous owners - of differing nationalities - as Brits who have been living in Spain are notorious for dumping dogs and cats behind when they move away from Spain.

This farcical by-law also infringes the rights of human beings by restricting their behaviours to act in caring and humane ways and I know through my worldwide work for the animals that the majority of tourists feed the animals.

Lastly, but certainly not least, on the Costa del Sol, as throughout Spain and countries worldwide, stray cats and dogs are being helped by individuals and worldwide charities. I know for a fact that there have been, and are international groups, working to neuter and help the strays of the Costa del Sol, pouring thousands of euros into Spain for this very purpose. Yet their thanks? To be persecuted as criminals! Recently someone who ‘allegedly’ fed a group of neutered stays was reported to the Benalmadena police and has been levied with a 90 euro fine!

This is outrageous and disgusting and I hope the nasty person who reported them realizes that the more Spain acts in this way to caring people and innocent animals the less people will visit Spain and the economy will suffer as it relies on tourism.

We petition the Spanish government to eradicate the by-law which prohibits the feeding or neutering of stray and abandoned cats.

This law is barbaric and cruel seeking to starve innocent animals to death. It also infringes human rights by seeking to restrict positive and caring human behaviour and actions.
