With only two months to go before this year's general election, it is unrealistic to expect Congress to set aside any time for debating and voting on the legislation targeted by this petition. New signatures will therefore no longer be accepted as of September 6, 2010.

Petition Background (Preamble):
[It should be noted that the Fiscal Discipline, Earmark Reform, and Accountability Act, which is linked to from this petition, is actually the short title. The much longer official one is "A bill to provide greater accountability of taxpayers' dollars by curtailing congressional earmarking, and for other purposes."]
If history teaches us anything, it's that attempts to reform "business as usual" in our nation's capital are instinctively opposed by most of those who are thriving under the old system. The bipartisan legislation targeted in this petition is no exception, with only 1 Democrat, 4 Republicans, and 1 Independent cosponsoring it thus far. Counting its Democratic sponsor, that makes a total of 7 out of 100 Senators --- far short of the 51 votes needed to ensure its passage. To make matters worse, the Majority and Minority Leaders are not among its supporters.
This legislation is therefore likely to wind up buried in committee, which is typically the fate for reform measures. That is, unless we the people speak out on its behalf. The more Senators we get to cosponsor it, the more pressure will be exerted upon the congressional leadership to let it be DEBATED AND VOTED ON.

We agree with Democratic Senator Feingold that, "People across the country are watching their budgets in these tough economic times and Congress should do the same." We also agree with Republican Senator McCain that, "American families are suffering during these tough economic times, and it’s important now, more than ever, that Congress restores fiscal discipline to Washington and gets our financial house in order."
That's why we urge each of you to cosponsor and pass their bipartisan Fiscal Discipline, Earmark Reform, and Accountability Act as expeditiously as possible!
