At the November 29, 2016 meeting of the Citizens Association of Georgetown, Mayor Bowser offered two options to parents deeply concerned about the city's proposal for a two year relocation of Hyde Addison, Georgetown's only public elementary school, to Meyer Elementary, a facility over three miles from its current site and by the city's own calculation requiring commutes of up to 40 minutes each way for children as young as three years old.  Her first option is to proceed with relocating to Meyer Elementary over the strong objections of the community.  Her second option is to delay and relocate the school to the University of the District of Columbia campus in fall 2018.

The city needs more time to work with parents and the community to address serious concerns expressed unanimously by ANC2E, by hundreds of parents, by the majority of the Hyde Addison School Improvement Team, and by the Citizens Association of Georgetown.

We fully expect Mayor Bowser to stand by her promise to renovate all schools in the District of Columbia, and to do it right.  For Hyde Addison, that means taking the time to get the swing and the building design right.

We, parents, members of the Georgetown community, and supporters of Hyde Addison Elementary School favor delaying the renovation of Hyde-Addison for one year and relocating the school to the University of the District of Columbia campus in fall 2018 over the proposed relocation in fall 2017 to Meyer Elementary.

We urge city leaders to work with parents and the community during that time to develop a swing process that takes into account the concerns expressed by parents, community leaders, and supporters of Hyde Addison.
