On June 14th, 2012, three Grade 12 students of a York Region Secondary School, stayed after school and played the following prank:

1) 1 stairwell was strewn with toilet paper
2) Some blank sticky notes were placed on the walls
3) A few door handles were dabbed with petroleum jelly
4) And a few pieces of furniture re-arranged

A prank for which if caught they would no doubt be punished. Caught they were. The decision makers dealt out a 5 days suspension, which is fair and accepted by the students. But this was done, by the decision makers, with the intent and timing in mind, that the suspension coincided with the students' Grade 12 Graduation Ceremony.

As such these students and their families WILL NOT BE ALLOWED to attend the Graduation Ceremony. These are 3 kids, who have NEVER played a school prank before the 14th June incident, NEVER been suspended before, strong academic track records and all around very decent kids. They have worked hard to graduate and deserve to attend this landmark in their academic life, which they have waited 14 years to achieve.

Punishment they deserve, but NOT INCLUDING A BAN from their Graduation Ceremony. That punishment could be substituted with suspension plus additional hours of community service or some other fitting punishment.

We, the undersigned, agree that these students have played a prank, and deserve to be punished. This should include suspension and community service.

But these students SHOULD BE ALLOWED to attend their very significant Grade 12 Graduation Ceremony, which they have worked hard towards achieving.
