In April 2017, Valley City Park began allowing camping. This project was pushed through by the city council quickly and without adequate communication to Valley residents who are most affected (e.g., back yards now look at RVs rather than green space). The camp pads provide electrical, water, and trash removal. Residents were told camping would be a great option for family who come into town to visit and also for the Valley Days BBQ competitors who come into town every summer. What has happened is people are staying in the park as temporary/short-term housing (e.g. temporary workers in the area). They receive approval from the city to stay beyond 7 days, because the sign allows for that on a case-by-case basis. Camping in the park should not be allowed to turn into temporary living quarters.
We the undersigned demand the city council and police of Valley, Nebraska enforce the 7-day maximum stay rule for camping in our city park, without exception, and we request this be clear on the signage at the camping registration area at the park. No city employee should be allowed to give approval for extended stays in the park for any reason.
