#Cyclist Access
Target:
Town of Preston / Town of Montville
Region:
United States of America

Designating this portion of Rt. 2A as a full access roadway will allow cyclists to cross the Thames River and access the Montville/Uncasville area businesses without having to embark on a long detour.

Currently, cyclists that reside near the Pequot Bridge on the Preston side must either travel 7 miles through downtown Norwich and back down Rt. 32 to reach the Uncasville / Montville area. The other option is to make the 20 mile journey across the Gold Star Bridge in Groton and then north on Rt. 32. While, these may not be great distances for motor vehicle traffic, for those of us traveling under our own power, this is not an insignificant inconvenience.

As the bridge currently maintains a shoulder that is sufficiently wide (~ 6ft) for safe bicycle traffic, the only action required is administrative.

This would greatly ease the burden on those actively engaged in reducing their automobile use out of concern for the environmental impact these vehicles have in large numbers. Another ancillary benefit is a slight reduction in noise pollution in the area from the reduced number of motor vehicles traveling across the bridge.

We, the citizens and cyclists of Connecticut, respectfully request that the portion of Rt. 2A extending from it's intersection with Rt. 12 to Exit 1 be designated as a full access highway.
