In November of 2008, the Measure S General Obligation Bond was passed. This bond included funding for a gymnasium at Bernal Intermediate School located at 6610 San Ignacio Avenue in the Santa Teresa neighborhood of San Jose.
Construction began in 2011, but it was not until the framing went up in February of 2012 that the residents of the community were aware of the project and the impact on the community.
A community impact study was never performed and residents were not notified of public meetings discussing the project. Now were they informed of the results of the meetins or the plans.
We have met with the deputy superintendent of the school district and presented our list of concerns which have all been rejected.
We, the undersigned, call upon the State of California to take action and address our concerns outlined in this petition.
1. The location of the building (next to the fence line) and its size (height) will impact home values in the neighborhood. We believe there are some compromises available, but they have all been rejected by the school district.
2. We believe there will be additional athletic events held at the new gym which will make the parking situation work. Often, when events are held at the school, residents cannot find parking.
3. Lights from the current school structures are a minor problem at night. Residents are concerns about lights from this very tall structure next to the fence line.
4. Noise level during events are a concern. We have been unable to find out what kind of events will be held and the hours of these events.
The following complaints are specific to the construction phase of the project. We have also been told they will not be addressed:
1. Wind under the roof creates a very loud howling noise that is disruptive to the neighborhood.
2. Construction starts at 7 am on weekdays and 8 am on Saturdays.
