Dear Elector,
Sheryll Murray, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for South East Cornwall and wife of Cornish fisherman Neil Murray has launched this petition calling for a level playing field for the UK fleet in the light of the French and Spanish fuel aid from their governments.
After the launch in Looe with local Councillors Armand Toms and Brian Galipeau, Sheryll said, "It is a disgrace that the French and Spanish Governments are supporting their fishermen with aid. Our local fishermen are operating with diminishing quotas and now they have been handed a further blow by having to compete with the subsidised fleets from other Nations. It is time for the European Commission to propose a real level playing field by supporting fishermen from all Member States with the same amount of aid. This is a clear example of how subsidiarity does not work."
Sheryll continued, "I am hoping the Petition will spread far and wide and am asking other Conservative MPs to get behind this Petition which will be presented to Parliament by Bill Wiggin MP, Shadow Fisheries Minister. I am delighted and very grateful for the support of Chris Dinham of MarineCo who has agreed to have copies of the Petition in their Outlets."
To the House of Commons.
The Petition of the residents of the South West and others declares that they are concerned that aid granted to the fishermen of France and Spain is distorting the operation of the European Single Market.
The Petitioners therefore request that the House of Commons urges the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs to do everything within his power to ensure that the European Commission creates a funding stream within the European Fisheries Fund to provide emergency aid to fishermen from all member states of the European Union, thus safeguarding non-discrimination within the European Single Market.
