When individuals, by themselves, or in groups approached DCI about recent and not so recent changes that could drastically change instrumentation in the pre show, similar instrument changes on the field, and the increase in amplification and narration, certain members of the DCI board of directors suggested that if one did not care for the changes, he/she should stay away from the activity.
This petition (which is not the same as the one which posed the questions to DCI) is designed to inform DCI that some, if not many, fans, alumni, financial supporters and others familiar with the activity are going to take their suggestion seriously and literally.
WHEREAS, the activity known as Drum and Bugle Corps has traditionally entertained people internationally with a unique character, sound and presentation; and,
WHEREAS, the organization known as Drum Corps International consisting of representatives from the top Drum and Bugle Corps has, by tradition and fiat, operated as the governing body of the Drum and Bugle Corps Activity since 1972; and,
WHEREAS, Drum Corps International has recently acted in a manner that has eliminated the unique character, sound and presentation of Drum and Bugle Corps; and,
WHEREAS, when Drum Corps International was presented with a petitions signed by over 5,300 fans, alumni, and financial contributors to Drum and Bugle Corps, its response by members of the its board of directors and other Representatives indicated they would make decisions solely based on the opinions of its members and that, according to one board member, those who disagreed should stay away from the activity.
BE IT, THEREFORE, RESOLVED, that the undersigned fans, alumni and financial contributors to Drum and Bugle Corps will accept the suggestion of Drum Corps International and will “stay away from the activity” by boycotting all Drum Corps International competitions, whether live performance, broadcast to cinemas or streamed over the internet. Further, we will not purchase Drum and Bugle Corps related souvenirs or paraphernalia, contribute to Drum Corps International drum corps member corps or to those corps attempting to become member corps; and we shall encourage others by any means to also accept the suggestion made by Drum Corps International to “stay away” and respond as cited above.
